Apply

We currently have two applications: the Judith Leibowitz Scholarship and the Judith Leibowitz Scholarship Fund Grant Program. See below for more info on both and links to the application forms.

Judith Leibowitz Scholarship

Applications for the Judith Leibowitz Scholarship are currently closed.

This scholarship was conceived to support Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color who want to train to become Alexander Technique teachers.

The Judith Leibowitz Scholarship Fund opposes racism and any forms of oppression in the work, the writings, and the institutions of the Technique. The original texts of F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) contain racist remarks and theories. We denounce these racist statements and scientific inaccuracies.

The Scholarship: The Judith Leibowitz Scholarship Fund under the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) will pay the equivalent of 50% of tuition per term on an AmSAT-approved Alexander Technique teacher training course.

Scholarship funding will apply to terms of training beginning in September 2024 and will apply to a maximum of nine terms of full-time training or the equivalent hours of part-time training. If a recipient needs to pause their training, the award can be halted and resumed as long as the recipient has met the requirements of their selected training course. AmSAT encourages people to complete training within 5 years. For candidates currently in training, the Judith Leibowitz Scholarship Fund will not pay tuition retroactively.

Criteria to apply:

  • Identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color

  • Plan to become an AmSAT-certified teacher of the Alexander Technique

  • Agree to meet AmSAT training course requirements to train for a minimum of 3 years and 1600 hours and to satisfy the requirements of your selected training course

  • Be in the process of applying, accepted by, or currently enrolled in an AmSAT-approved training course at the time of application for the JLS

Decisions will be announced by May 31, 2024. Select candidates may be invited to interview. If you have any questions please contact us at jleibowitzscholarship@amsatonline.org

More information on teacher training can be found at The American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT), a 501(c)3 organization: www.amsatonline.org

*Sample Application Questions-

1) What inspires you to become an Alexander Technique Teacher?

2) What roles do diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging play in your current work and life? How do you see this inspiring your work as an Alexander teacher in the future?

3) Please tell us about a meaningful moment from an Alexander Technique lesson or class.

Judith Leibowitz Scholarship Fund Grant Program

Applications for the Judith Leibowitz Scholarship Fund Grant Program are currently closed.

The JLSF Grant Program provides financial awards to people who identify as Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Color who are enrolled in an AmSAT-approved teacher certification course.

Grants may help ease the costs of training and costs of living during training. For instance, funds could be used to help with training tuition, AT lessons, training materials, transportation expenses, living expenses and more. We are open to hearing what you need to help during your training.

An individual or a group may apply for funding up to $599.

We will accept grant applications until the $6000 allocation for the Grant Program has been disbursed.

Please note: any funds awarded directly to a trainee are taxable income. Funds that go to tuition costs or other qualified direct disbursements from AmSAT (for example, individual or group lessons or mentoring costs) can be paid directly to your training program or to the individual providing the service(s), in which case you are not liable for taxes.

Kindly report back to us after using your grant award. This can be in the form of a short email, a photo, a drawing, a story—anything you are moved to send, letting us know how the money was spent and the value received by you as a recipient. Sharing the impact of these grants with our donors will aid in raising funds for future grants. Please send us your report within six weeks of receiving your grant.

Review Process

The JLSF will review applications at the end of each month. We will do our best to review your application sooner if you have an immediate need.  A committee member may contact you to ask questions during the process. When a decision has been reached, you will be notified through your preferred method selected on the grant application. If you have any questions please contact us at jleibowitzscholarship@amsatonline.org
